Mystic Festival 2023: VHS Hell comes back. They always do.

Bloody revenge, bloody rituals, blood-thirsty cyborgs, and some more blood here and there – VHS Hell returns to Mystic Festival to entertain you, and to give you a chance to relax.

For a while now VHS Hell have been organizing screenings of amazing budget movies from genres back in a day you would normally find at the lowest shelves of video cassette rentals. These were movies so awfully bad that they became delightfully good.

Deadly Prey, directed by David A. Prior, 1987, 88 min.

In the 80’s, when Rambo ruled the collective mind of a generation, a number of directors tried to replicate the success of a Vietnam war veteran who is forced to fight for survival at home. All of them failed – except for David A. Prior and his “Deadly Prey”. Yes, “Deadly Prey” did have an extremely small budget, could not boast about having any prime actors in the cast, and its script may be considered somewhat hollow. However, the very moment muscled Danton enters the set, wearing short pants, and runs back and forth against the background of a catchy soundtrack, none of that matters – this is pure action cinema at its best, or worst. Although “Deadly Prey” entered the cinemas 35 years ago, it still rules. How can you not love this movie, when the main hero kills his enemy with their own hand – which he previously cut off, of course.

Shock ‘Em Dead, directed by Mark Freed, 1991, 93 min.

What do we get if we mix low-budget horror cinema, glam metal, a director who previously released only an instruction video with the drummer from Toto, and an actress who was known from performing in instruction videos – but of a more kinky kind? “Shock ‘Em Dead” was released in 1991 as a comedy horror, and its creators obviously failed to notice that the 1980s are over.

Martin is a loser and a musician dreaming of stardom, but lacking talent. His lot changes when he meets a voodoo priestess. With her help, overnight, he transforms into a rockstar whose solos are as speedy as Poland’s inflation rate. There’s a catch, of course. To maintain his newly acquired status, he needs to feed off other people’s life-force.

In “Shock ‘Em Dead” you’ll find big hair, Traci Lords, guitars, hair, your cheesy neighbor’s Halloween decoration, hair, gore, voodoo, hair, skeletons from the closet, and, of course, hair.

Hands of Steel (aka Vendetta dal futuro) directed by Sergio Martino, 1986, 94 min.

Legendary “The Terminator” rip-off directed by the Italian icon of giallo genre gained incredible popularity in video cassette rentals. The titular owner of steel fists is a cyborg who rebels against his taskmasters. A manhunt (or a cyborg-hunt) is organized. “Hands of Steel” offers you great entertainment, full of references to American action movie classics. Starring: John Saxon, George Eastman and muscled Daniel Green.

The program of VHS Hell chill zone will be completed with old-school commercials, trailers and music videos from the 1990s.

As a reminder, more than 90 bands will perform at the festival, including Ghost, Danzig, Gojira, Meshuggah, Behemoth, Electric Wizard, The Hellacopters, Testament, Watain, Moonspell, Perturbator, Exodus, Dismember, Voivod, Alcest, Sleep Token, Unleashed, Carpathian Forest, Grave, Soen, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons (z setem Motörhead), Godflesh, Primitive Man, Earthless, Lucifer and Greg Puciato.
